New Elementary School Garden
The Green Heart Project

Charleston, SC      Health

The Green Heart Project is a nonprofit organization based in Charleston, South Carolina that builds urban gardens and farm-to-school programs. With a high value placed on health, education and community - the Green Heart Project utilizes these urban farms and school gardens as outdoor classrooms to educate students about the value of healthy food, reiterate classroom curriculum through hands-on learning applications and connect the community through volunteer engagement.

Founded in 2009 with one small school garden, the Green Heart Project now manages 5 gardens, serving over 1,200 students (and growing!) through 10 farm-to-school programs with a focus on title-1 schools where this education and inspiration is needed most!

This project will provide the necessary funding for the Green Heart Project to build a school garden for a title-1 school in need in the Charleston Area. The garden will be utilized as an outdoor classroom for the Green Heart Project’s farm-to-school program and provide an opportunity for over 500 students to learn, become inspired and grow!

Why We Like This Project

I love the idea of building gardens in elementary schools! It not only gives the students a chance to get outside, but it teaches them the value of growing healthy foods and building their community.
